![]() ![]() ![]() Microsoft could not sell Windows 10 and gave it away for free at launch. You might not believe it but that is just a dry fact. So native Linux steam games don't require middleware such WINE/Proton.ġ3 - Windows is dead. ![]() The point and click Steam UI looks the same on Windows and Linux. ![]() We aren't talking about PC Linux from the 1990's. So there would have to be a large number of quality native Linux games for players to choose from and then allow them to choose to game on Linux over some span of time to more accurately gauge demand.Ĩ - If Linux were not a viable platform to target for gaming Valve would have gave up a long time ago or not started at all.ĩ - If Linux were not a viable platform then Google would have given up a long time ago thus there would be no Android OS based on Linux (hint: Android is just a custom Linux OS).ġ0 - If Android is a viable gaming platform and multiple PC Linux distros are viable then I'm going to go out on a limb and say Linux is viable.ġ1 - If one can play music (MP3's / MP4's / CDDA) and one can play movies (*.mpg, *.mpeg, *.ogg, *.divx, *.mp4, etc.) on Linux then one can play games on Linux.ġ2 - Developer/publisher fear is no longer a valid excuse. If one can't game on Linux then there isn't going to be a large grouping of Linux gamers (implicit). if there are no native Linux game offerings then one can't game on Linux. Some of those users do not make the effort to game on Linux but have perfectly capable hardware of gaming on Linux.ħ - The chicken and egg scenario. (notice there are no clear answers to my questions)Ħ - Those who dual/multi boot can be both Windows users and Linux users. One could be gaming using WINE and thus would be mostly undetectable as a Linux user/gamer.Ĥ - Since the misconception about Linux install base size is prevalent most game developers/publishers are not going to write and maintain code that explicitly attempt to detect WINE/Proton users (I'm talking about Steam games and non-Steam games). 1 - A Linux version of Wolcen was part of the original kickstarter.Ģ - Steam Hardware survey is not a complete picture of Linux usage, gaming on Linux or the size of the desktop Linux install base.ģ - There is literally no way for anyone to accurately account for the size of the Linux install base since one could be running multiple versions of Linux on a single PC or across multiple PCs. ![]()
